When the Heat Became a Health Story

Extreme heat was killing people quietly. It was being filed, when it was filed at all, under weather.

The challenge

Health workers in three regions were seeing a pattern the national conversation had no language for. Climate coverage was framed as a future risk; heat mortality was a present one, undercounted and politically invisible.

The approach

  1. 01

Partnered with epidemiologists to turn eighteen months of clinic data into a story a newsroom could actually run.

  2. 02

Placed the evidence with health reporters, not environment desks, changing which editors owned the issue.

  3. 03

Built community-facing guidance with health extension workers so coverage arrived with something people could do.

What we produced

  • An investigative data package offered free to national outlets
  • Photo essay and short film following three health extension workers through a heat week
  • SMS and radio advisory system piloted in two regions
The data existed for two years. It became policy the month it became a story.

The result

Public accountability is a communications outcome. This is what it looks like when it works.
